For our first blog post, I thought I’d share the story of why we exist.

Amplify Health is the manifestation of 8 years of relentless experimentation on how to improve health outcomes at the service level. It’s come down to one belief: The best predictor of avoidable healthcare expenses is the strength of the relationship between patient and provider. Our mission is to measure and improve that relationship.

Prior to Amplify, I was President/COO of a company called REM Medical, a series of sleep medicine clinics. In 2008, Medicare changed the reimbursement for our primary source of revenue: CPAP therapy, used to treat sleep apnea. Instead of getting paid when our doctors prescribed the therapy (pay for volume), we only got paid if our patients were using our therapy (pay for value). To adapt to this change, we tried all the things you read about today in the broader healthcare industry, such as implementing quality measures and process controls. It had minimal impact. But one day we noticed that our most adherent patients were also the ones with which we had established the strongest relationships. This led us to reorient our operation around improving the relationship between our patients and our staff and physicians, theorizing that the byproduct would be better health outcomes. When we sold REM Medical, 79% of our patients were adherent to therapy. Our success rate is, to my knowledge, higher than any other clinic in the nation.

At Amplify Health, we have assembled a team of people that believe in, and are dedicated to, the proposition that relationships matter. We are working with provider groups that are incentivized to manage patient populations and that believe in the value of human interaction.

The early results are incredible and I’m looking forward to sharing more details in the coming months and years. Thanks for reading and please subscribe if you’d like to get periodic updates.
